Project Uli at Tattle tackles online gender-based violence and tech-facilitated gender-based violence by developing collective tools for safer digital engagement. We do this through three components, which are reparative, redactive and educational, to build a community of people who engage with Project Uli in different ways they align with it.
We started with building a dataset of slur words in Indian regional languages annotated to expand on who is harmed and how harm is normalised by language-centric abuse. Then, we built a plugin tool for browsers that redacts slur words by highlighting them to share the metadata on the slur words or covering the abusive words with a patch.
The tool catches the slur words that have found their way into the 1500+ slur word dataset. Finally, we engage with young people in workshops at schools and colleges to denormalise online abuse with a specific focus on language-centric abuse prevalent in digital social networking spaces.
